Photography of the Victorian era - Ebb & Flow Festival

Learn about the very first photographers in the Old High Street Intra area, their studios and images, and who occupies the same addresses today. This project looks back to a time when the high street was bustling with sailors, theatres and breweries and many photographers were competing for trade. Learn how photographic techniques evolved between 1852-1918; the period when studio portraits first became common place, and find out why your Facebook profile picture might not be such a modern idea after all.

About the artist

Rikard Osterlund is a Swedish photographer based in Medway who balances his commercial practice for high-profile clients such as Tate along with long-term personal fine art projects and a fascination of early photographic history and processes.

Hulkes Lane Darkroom & Studio is a new photographic space in the Old High Street Intra area co-founded with James Barnett, with facilities and services for photographers who work in both with film and digital.
