Dates and Times Required:  

During the Festival: 22nd May - 13 June 2021


Wednesday to Sunday

Specifically on the following dates:

  • Thursday 29 April & Friday 30 April | Interview via Zoom (you will be allocated to one of these dates)
  • Monday 17 May & Tuesday 18 May | Induction & Training via Zoom (you will be allocated to one of these dates based on availability highlighted at interview)

Venues where these roles are required include:

  • Wat Tyler Country Park, Pitsea
  • Shoeburyness Garrison (Gunners Park)
  • Chalkwell Beach
  • Chalkwell Hall (Metal & Netpark)
  • Southend Pier


Role Description

This role has a number of different facets including: invigilating specific works of art; helping audience members to access and understand planned artworks and events safely; helping audience members to understand and take part in the work to help artists to achieve their full vision; explaining the context of the work within the wider scope of Estuary 2021; promoting other Festival elements.


Public facing role, interacting with audience members, sharing information, encouraging people to explore and understand the artworks on exhibition.

Ensure that the artworks are respected, kept safe and interacted with appropriately.

We will also ask you to take part in the collection of visitor feedback through questionnaires (paper and on iPad) as part of our evaluation of Estuary 2021.

Ensure that our Festival COVID-19 safety protocols are adhered to and implemented - by and for all members of the Invigilation & Volunteers team - as well as for and by audiences. 

Skills and Qualities

Confident and outgoing personality who enjoys spending time talking to people and can approach people sensitively. A knowledge and interest in the Visual Arts and/or Literature is desirable. This role will require Invigilators to digest the information about the artists and artworks on exhibition and those speaking at Estuary 2021 – particularly in the site/hub that you are working within.   

Minimum Age for this role is 18.

Note: This role involves being outside for extended periods of time.

Estuary 2021 will provide T-shirts and Fleeces to be worn.

  • You will be supported by the Estuary 2021 project team, the Metal staff team and a dedicated Invigilator/Volunteer manager throughout the Festival; ensuring that you feel confident, valued and safe 

Recruitment process

  • Invigilators will be recruited based on the suitability of their interests and skills for the role selected
  • Please submit your CV and a Covering Letter (no more than one side of A4) explaining your suitability for the role to [email protected] by midnight on Sunday 25 April
  • Once you have submitted your application it will be read by staff at Metal. If you have been successful you will hear from us by Tuesday 27 April when we will contact you inviting you for an interview via Zoom. Interviews will take place on either Thursday 29 April or Friday 30 April
  • Full training and induction will take place on either Monday 17 May or Tuesday 18 May (availability to be highlighted at interview) via Zoom. All successful candidates MUST attend a training and induction session.
  • At this session you will have an opportunity to meet fellow invigilators, receive essential information on COVID-19 safety and protocols for you and others, and receive an induction pack with all the information you will need for the role.
